How to save money around your home

We all know the old proverb ‘charity begins at home’, but your savings should as well. There’s tonnes of ways to save money in your home, but it can be overwhelming working out where to start. We have five top tips to help you...

  1. It all starts with a plan

It can be really easy when you’re food shopping to buy things you don’t need or even necessarily want, meaning you spend more money than you’ve budgeted for, and probably waste food as well. Before you go shopping, spend 10 minutes planning your weekly meals, check your cupboards to take stock of what you already have, and write a shopping list. This way there’s less temptation to buy things you don’t need.

  2. Check your home is fully insulated

You can save a lot of money in the long term by ensuring your home is well insulated. You can do simple things like checking your windows and doors and filling in any draughts using insulating tape or draught excluders. Closing your curtains at night will save you money on your heating bills each month, and leaving the oven on for an extra 20 minutes each evening will help keep your home warm without turning the radiators on.

  3. Declutter your home

Get your car boot sale on… By selling your old clothing, antiques, gadgets, furniture and homewares, you can declutter your home, and profit from it too. Plus, if you’re at a car boot sale, you can shop around for anything you need at a discounted rate, rather than buying it brand new.

  4. Shop around
We are overwhelmed with choice nowadays, from where we should buy our food to who should be our broadband or energy provider, and sometimes it can just be easier to stick with what we know. However, by taking the time to look online and use comparison sites to shop around, you could end up saving quite a large sum of money each month on your everyday household bills.

  5. Drink more water

Not only does drinking plenty of water have great health benefits — it has financial benefits, too. Drinking tap water, instead of buying juice or fizzy drinks you will save money each week in your grocery shop.
